“Maeglin”

©2001 Sam R. Balcomb

This character always fascinated me; he is the one who betrays the holy city of Gondolin and causes its downfall (The Silmarillion, J.R.R. Tolkien). He did it for the lust of power, wealth, and—most of all—obsession for the king's daughter, Idril (see other sketch). This was the first in the "Gondolin" series, and I wanted to create images and poses that would be found in paintings of that Age (in comic-book style). I was particularly pleased with the armor and how I found a variety of techniques to get that shiny "flare" look. Photoshop's Lens Flare filter came in handy, although it's kind of cheating.... And in case you were wondering, his house's emblem is the Sable Mole.
