Horse fighting is a traditional activity of the Miao people who reside in the southwest part of China. The grace of strength and energy is conveyed through the fight of two horses. The painting depicts the different stages and events in the journey of life and the relationship between human and nature. It also contains many Chinese cultural symbols: the red horses represent courage and fortune, the chain of pomegranates on each horse represent fertility and perpetuity, the Yin & Yang symbols represent supernatural power and the invincible energy of life that governs us all. Together with the mask of Miao, the life tree, totem pole, a new born child, and many other details, the painting creates a mysterious atmosphere which is the unique characteristic of the life of the Miao peoples.
