Notes on the Photographs (text by Robert Balcomb)
"diane" (1977)
When diane (she never capitalizes her name) came to pick up her ordered portrait, she was dressed like thisI made her sit again. It is one of my favorites.
•Rolleicord, Panatomic X, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Name: Wolffe's carbon pencil. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.
"Mary with Scarf" (1978)
One of many portraits of wife Mary Balcomb, wearing one of her favorite scarves. I select a few portraits to print without any texture screen to demonstrate how well the abrading technique works with a face. Once, I photographed a man who had a day's growth of beard—with an abrading blade I shaved him, every whisker.
•Rolleicord, Panatomic X, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer.
"Selma" (1978)
Mary Balcomb's mother (dec). This is the last of a 20-year series of portraits of a kind and gracious lady, everybody's favorite. A full-blood Finn, she spent most of her life in Michigan, and many years with us in Albuquerque; her last years were spent in Washington state.
•Rolleicord, Panatomic X, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.

"Nicolina" (1978)
Nicolina is from Bosnia, here to attend college preparing for a medical career. The name is in Bosnian—her family in Bosnia has this portrait with name in English.
•Rolleicord, AgfaPan 25, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.

"Joan" (ca 1978)
This print has a single etching texture around the perifery, none on the face. The result is one of my favorites.
•Rolleicord, Panatomic X, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.
"Brownlow" (1979)
In November 1979 The Bremerton Community Theatre performed the musical Oliver in which I had the role of Oliver's grandfather Mr. Brownlow. I did many plays locally (as well as in New Mexico), and after every costume role I had with BCT I would come to my studio in makeup and costume and "shoot myself."
•Rolleicord, Panatomic X, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Name: Wolffe's carbon pencil. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.

"Jaime" (1983)
The next time I saw Jaime he was six feet tall and attending University.
•Rolleicord, AgfaPan 25, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.

"Jenny" (1992)
Jenny's grandmother brought her dressed like this, saying that she didn't have time to change her, but brought the proper clothes for the sitting. I said, "Don't touch her," and proceeded with the sitting as shown here. Afterwards, Grandma dressed her up and combed her hair for a second sitting. She took both portraits; the favorite of everybody has been this one.
Rolleicord, Kodak 120 Panatomic X, Agfa Protriga Rapid 111-2, MQ. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.

"Jordan" (1996)
Jordan's third sitting: 22 mos, 6 yrs, 17 yrs. Her graduation portrait. I considered her my favorite model. She also posed for one of my "After" series.
•Rolleicord, AgfaPan 25, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.

"Sompit" (1998)
Sompit came from Thailand, now living in Seattle. Her name is written in her native language form.
Mamiya RB67 Professional, 120 Agfa 25, MQ, Agfa Portriga Rapid 111-2. Texture screens: Mortensen Etching 1, Craquelure, Guttenberg Bible.
"Jo Ann Kane" (1997)
Owner and head of Jo Ann Kane Music Services in Los Angeles, a music preparation office for the movie industry.
•Rolleicord, AgfaPan 25, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Name: Wolffe's carbon pencil. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.
"Artie Kane" (1998)
Artie is a superb musician's musician, composer, conductor. He spent years as one of the country's top jazz pianists, composer and conductor for the Sonja Heine Ice Show, same for the Ice Capades, composed music scores for film and television, and conducted orchestras for movie sound tracks. He has now retired to his Island retreat with wife Jo Ann.
•Rolleicord, AgfaPan 25, Agfa PR 118-2, MQ developer. Name: Wolffe's carbon pencil. Texture screen: Mortensen Etching 2.
"Greg Hill " (2001)
Greg is a fireman in the San Diego area, who came to my studio as a devotee of anything Mortensen and spent a day going through my work and my WM collection.
