“Gene Krupa”

Al Stewart

Gene Krupa defined Big Band drumming in the late 1930's and 40's with Benny Goodman's band. He also played with Benny's smaller groups (trio, quartet, etc.). In fact, Gene was associated with Benny at one time or another throughout his life, even though he left to form his own band in the 1940's. I captured this moment of Gene while we were listening to a playback of his band on a recording session in New York City in 1962.
