“Richard Rodgers”

Al Stewart

This photograph was taken on Sunday morning, May 15, 1960. We were rehearsing for that evening's honoring of Cole Porter at the Metropolitan Opera House when it was still on 39th Street in New York City. Mr. Rodgers has paused for a moment while direction is being given to the stage before continuing to rehearse the grand finale of the evening's presentation. That night, after the many friends, entertainers, and guests had paid their personal homage to Mr. Porter, Richard Rodgers walked down the center aisle of this beautiful theater, alone in the spotlight, opened the door to the podium, and conducted the orchestra through the grand finale of a thrilling, exciting, and most memorable tribute.
