In 1977,
after 8 years
of running my own Fine Art Gallery
(with monthly shows) and a craft and folk art store,
and developing an alternative shopping center with 20 shops,
galleries, restaurants, and theaters, I finally realized that it was time
for a change. I asked myself: “What do I want to do that I have never
done?” The answer immediately came back to me: “Travel to exotic
lands.” Just weeks after that I was at a gift show in Seattle when one
of the vendors I dealt with, who imported goods from Afghanistan, asked if
I wanted to design a line of clothing and go to Afghanistan to supervise the
production. The Exotic Land had been presented to me and I said “Yes!”
without hesitation. There the 4-month adventure began.
