Waiting
for Lunch ©2001 JOANNE WARFIELD The protocol for foreign visitors was for the family to sit around the perimeter of the room while the guests were being entertained. Everyone, including the children, sat quietly at the side while Janine, my French landlady, and I talked with the Tailor (though I could only speak a few words of Farsi). With the familys gracious permission, I managed to take a few photos without too much intrusion. When lunch was served, everyone but the Tailor left the room. We ate with our hands from a mound of various vegetables and local dishes that were spread out on a big cloth in the center of the floor. |
