“This series of self portraits came from one of the weeks when I was alone in Cortona, Italy, between the photo workshop classes that I teach each year. I have done them every year for the past five years as a source of self therapy. It is very emotional to be alone with the camera and with yourself as the subject. You imagine all the things you feel that seem so important at the time will somehow show up on the film, and sometimes they do! I cannot wait to get the film back to see. After it is over I feel a sense of relief and release, and I can let go of all the moments that led up to the making of the images. Then they are all filed away, categorized, dated, and labeled in a Victorian way. They are not lost, and can be kept forever for later reference. I can stop thinking too much about myself and concentrate on outer images.”

Robin’s work was recently featured in the show “No Agenda But Their Own: a decade of work by women artists” which appeared at the Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Art critic/curator Jerry Cullum wrote this for the show: Robin Davis presents archetypes in color photography that owes much to the lush imaginative excess of nineteenth-century hand tinted work. Her “13 Women” series combines explanatory text with images of mythic and historic female figures whom she sees as providing psychological models for contemporary personal action.
