The story of post-Katrina New Orleans is trapped in dark, shadowy interiors that are impossible to capture on film. In his series "Shadows of Lives and Loss: Decaying Memories along the Gulf Coast," Dan Burkholder reveals a vivid new approach to the photographic image. With a digital camera and tripod, he makes multiple exposures of the same scene and uses special software to meld the expansive tonal range through a technique called High Dynamic Range imaging (HDR). Dan's final prints reveal lush detail from the darkest shadows to the most brilliant highlights.

Dan describes his new work as "portraits without people." The prints graphically illustrate the destruction of the places where the citizens of New Orleans lived, worked, learned, and worshipped. University of Texas Press is publishing a monograph of Dan's New Orleans images with a scheduled release date of early 2008. Be sure to watch the video he shot with his wife, Jill, called "Shadows of Lives and Loss."
