My Heroes in a Diner

Sam Clemens had the huckleberry pie
And Langston Hughes slurped beaten Roland Hayes
Young Salinger had ham and cheese on rye
And Papa drank White Elephants for days

"Monte Cristo, with your freshest bacon,"
Said Dumas when the waitress was all ears
Frost lingered on a path that is not taken
And missed lunchtime, by ten or twenty years

A Caesar salad came out on a tray
For Shakespeare as he sat and leered at Plath
Jack Kerouac was on the road all day
John Steinbeck wanted seedless grapes of wrath

With Orwell's order, lunch came to an end
"A plate of swine and make it quick, my friend!"
