Someone

someone, this very moment, is being born.
someone, somewhere, is taking his very last breath,
the release of which will forever rattle
in the memory of the loved one sitting at the bedside.

someone is making love for the very first time.
another is committing rape, again—
a repeat offender, a parolee,
freed, yet again, by an overcrowded system.

someone is receiving the best news of her life.
someone else is sitting in a darkened bedroom
holding a pistol,
gazing at its menacing promise of escape
from all pain and responsibility,
not thinking of the survivors
who will live with the consequences.

someone is waking up in their brand-new modern home,
the faint linger of fresh paint still in the air.
someone is huddled against the impersonal chill
of the concrete overpass; the only possessions are the
glass bottles in the shopping cart
(redeemable for maybe a bowl of soup)
and the tattered photo
of the estranged son
living a lifetime away.

every emotion, every event and life’s passage
is occuring this minute, somewhere:
anger
hunger
laughter
disappointment
ecstacy
grief
marriage
injury
discovery
betrayal
learning one has not long to live.

someone is finally able to walk again
after months, maybe years, of rehabilitation
following the accident a lifetime ago
meeting the ghost of Bacchus . . .

head on.

the prison gates are opening, right now,
for someone incarcerated since he was
but a boy,
a mere child when he drove that
getaway car for a holdup gone bad
so long ago.
out at last, in the foreign streets;
the thin veil of freedom
will begin to melt away as
a whole host of experiences unfold:
bigotry
hunger
disappointment
ecstacy
grief
marriage
injury
betrayal
discrimination
debt

someone, this very moment, is being born.
and someone, somewhere, is taking their last halting breath,
the faint echo of which will let flow
the dewy teardrop
off the petal of the early

morning

daffodil.
